  1. Extremely useful for viewing the forecast at a glance. You can quickly tell when the surf is likely to be good.
  2. The summaries are useful to assist in understanding the weather patterns as well as planning your day and trips.
  3. The arrows show the direction of the wind. The direction of the wind is from the origin e.g. an easterly wind blows to the west. The dotted line is gust speed of the wind. For most surf spots you want the wind to be light (0 - 10 kts) or in the opposite direction of the swell direction to make good surf conditions
  4. The dotted line is set wave face which is the predicted height of wave face as it breaks. The red line is period. This is the time between each set wave. You can see new swells are coming if this line jumps up, indicating a new pulse, or swell deterioration if the line drops. The swell height is the most important factor for surfing Fun surfable waves are normally in the height range between 0.8 - 2.0 m depending on your surfing abilities. The sea height includes both swell and sea chop. The greater the difference between this and swell height indicates a rougher/choppier sea.
  5. Swell direction is represented by the origin of the swell. A westerly swell is moving to the east.
  6. SwellMap presents tides as LAT (Lowest Astronomical Tide), which is the height above the lowest tidal water level

Rating information for Surfing

10A green rating between 7 and 10 indicates good quality surf, based on a long swell period, little or no wind, and swell height greater than a metre. If the wind is quite strong, then it will be an offshore wind.
6An orange rating between 4 and 6 indicates reasonable surf conditions, although possibly affected by light-fair onshore winds, and a lower swell period e.g. 8-10 seconds.
1A red rating between 1 and 3 suggests poor conditions such as strong onshore winds, a low swell period and a small swell height, all of which can make surfing more difficult.
