New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.
The weather is forecast to vary for the next week with a constant mixture of showers and sunny spells. There will be waves on both coastlines this weekend. Due to the dominant moderate W winds for most of the weekend, expect onshore surf for the West Coast and small clean conditions for the East Coast. The predicted weather change for the weekend will also help to reduce the problems that are currently being faced in the Bay of Plenty. Offshore winds and a smaller swell should reduce the amount of oil reaching our beaches and make operations easier.
West Coast of the North Island. The weekend should stay fairly consistent with average onshore surf conditions. Moderate W winds (~15 kts) should stick around for most of the weekend with the swell slowly dropping. On Saturday morning the waves are forecast to be solid at around the 5-6 ft range for exposed spots and then by Sunday waves should be more around 4 ft. The SW swell direction would suggest more protected spots will be providing a better quality and manageable wave this weekend.
East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Looking like a small but fun weekend of surf for the East coast with waves initially around 1-2ft range but easing through the weekend with moderate W winds. Look for the bigger waves at NE facing spots.
Gisborne and Mahia. A small swell should continue to generate waves around the 1-2 ft range for most of the weekend with moderate NW winds (~15 kts). So it should be a fun weekend of clean surf conditions.
Wellington. Saturday is looking very small with waves forecast to be 1 ft max for even exposed spots with moderate W winds going light SW by the evening. Sunday should pick up more swell from the SE with moderate SW winds (~15 kts) and then becoming lighter by the evening. Sunday afternoon is forecast to produce waves in the 2-3 ft range. So check out Sunday for some okay surf.
Christchurch. There should be a clean small 1-2 ft wave for most of the weekend as swell pushes in from the NE. Saturday morning is forecast to produce bigger waves before the swell eases. Winds will be moderate W (~10-15 kts) on Saturday going gentle (~5-10 kts) SW for Sunday, so E facing spots will get the offshore conditions.
Dunedin. Saturday is looking good for more NE facing spots as waves push in around the 3-4 ft range and winds are forecast from the S at around 15 kts. On Sunday the swell is then likely to push from the South and winds are also forecast to go moderate N. So S facing spots are looking more promising for Sunday.
