New Zealand Outlook – Weekend 14/15 October

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

The weather is forecast to vary for the next week with a constant mixture of showers and sunny spells. There will be waves on both coastlines this weekend. Due to the dominant moderate W winds for most of the weekend, expect onshore surf for the West Coast and small clean conditions for the East Coast. The predicted weather change for the weekend will also help to reduce the problems that are currently being faced in the Bay of Plenty. Offshore winds and a smaller swell should reduce the amount of oil reaching our beaches and make operations easier.

West Coast of the North Island. The weekend should stay fairly consistent with average onshore surf conditions. Moderate W winds (~15 kts) should stick around for most of the weekend with the swell slowly dropping. On Saturday morning the waves are forecast to be solid at around the 5-6 ft range for exposed spots and then by Sunday waves should be more around 4 ft. The SW swell direction would suggest more protected spots will be providing a better quality and manageable wave this weekend.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Looking like a small but fun weekend of surf for the East coast with waves initially around 1-2ft range but easing through the weekend with moderate W winds. Look for the bigger waves at NE facing spots.

Gisborne and Mahia. A small swell should continue to generate waves around the 1-2 ft range for most of the weekend with moderate NW winds (~15 kts). So it should be a fun weekend of clean surf conditions.

Wellington. Saturday is looking very small with waves forecast to be 1 ft max for even exposed spots with moderate W winds going light SW by the evening. Sunday should pick up more swell from the SE with moderate SW winds (~15 kts) and then becoming lighter by the evening. Sunday afternoon is forecast to produce waves in the 2-3 ft range. So check out Sunday for some okay surf.

Christchurch. There should be a clean small 1-2 ft wave for most of the weekend as swell pushes in from the NE. Saturday morning is forecast to produce bigger waves before the swell eases. Winds will be moderate W (~10-15 kts) on Saturday going gentle (~5-10 kts) SW for Sunday, so E facing spots will get the offshore conditions.

Dunedin. Saturday is looking good for more NE facing spots as waves push in around the 3-4 ft range and winds are forecast from the S at around 15 kts. On Sunday the swell is then likely to push from the South and winds are also forecast to go moderate N. So S facing spots are looking more promising for Sunday.

New Zealand Outlook – Weekend 1/2 Oct.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

A high pressure system is currently passing over New Zealand at the moment which has brought us some clear sunny days and clean surfing conditions for the West coast. The weekend is likely to see the weather deteriorate with rain for most parts as a front crosses the country. Moderate NE breezes are forecast for many areas. For Sunday a developing low pressure system in the Tasman will see a new swell on the West Coast pushing up from the Southwest. This should provide the West coast with growing surf for Sunday and peaking on Monday. Expect poorer quality surf for the East coast due to a weaker period swell driven by the onshore winds.

West Coast of the North Island. The swell is looking to drop through Saturday with waves peaking around 1-2 ft for exposed spots in the morning. Conditions should be nice and clean with fresh NE winds (~20 kts). The waves should start building again by Sunday afternoon as a new swell pulses (~13 sec period) with waves expected in the 2-3 ft range by the evening. So looking like a fun weekend for the West Coast.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Surfable but poor conditions all weekend due to the Northeast winds (~20 kts). Expect choppy waves in the 2-4 ft range for both Saturday and Sunday.

Gisborne and Mahia. Conditions are looking good at the moment with light Easterly winds and waves in the 3-4 ft range. The surf quality is unfortunately forecast to decline as East-Northeast winds pick up Saturday morning and continue through the rest of the weekend. The Southerly swell is also forecast to drop through the weekend with predicted 3 ft waves for Saturday morning going 1 ft by Sunday evening. So make the most of the better quality and bigger surf this evening and tomorrow morning.

Wellington. A South swell is currently generating some fun clean waves around 3-4 ft for exposed spots but will quickly fade into the weekend. Expect waves in the 1-3 ft range for the most exposed South facing spots for Saturday morning with clean offshore conditions. By Sunday winds will start to shift more to the North (~15 kts) and with waves likely to be very small (around 1 ft ). So get out there today or tomorrow morning for the better conditions.

Christchurch. Conditions are not looking very good for the weekend with consistent Northeast winds (~10-20 kts) and a weak choppy swell (~ 8 sec period). Waves are forecast to be biggest around Saturday afternoon at around 3ft due to a peak in the wind speed. Monday may offer smaller but cleaner conditions as the winds are forecast to lighten and swing South-Southwest.

Dunedin. Conditions will be small and clean with 2 ft waves and North going Northeast winds for Saturday morning for South facing spots. Then a more wind driven swell will produce waves from the East by Saturday afternoon. This swell will then drop quickly by Sunday morning with 1 ft waves expected and lightening winds from the North going Northwest by the afternoon. So for the better conditions seek South facing spots for Saturday, and for Sunday find more exposed East facing spots.

New Zealand Outlook – Week-end 10/11 Sept.

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

A lot of activity on the isboar charts for this week-end. The Northeast coasts should see the end of the flat spell with a nice little low, currently north of NZ, that will drop southeastwards through the week-end sending us some swell and further pushing that big high that gave us nice weather through the week. Looking West, a big low pressure system will develop over the Tasman and move to the southeast through the week-end, with its center hitting the southern South Island by Sunday. This will make for freshening NE winds, eventually going more Northwest and bringing some natsy weather late week-end/next week. Still plenty of swell out West, in the meantime, so make the most of it before that wind get too strong or seek shelter !

West Coast of the North Island. Good strong swell for Saturday in the 4-5 ft range on exposed coasts (~13-14 sec). Light offshore winds in the morning, slowly freshening from the northeast so looking real good all along the west coast , make your choice ! The swell will ease slowly so expect smaller surf for Sunday morning with stiff offshores. Still some good waves to be had if you can find shelter from the wind. Northwest change late Sunday with a new swell kicking for next week (but with strong onshore winds forecast at this stage).

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Some action lining up for this week-end with a new building Northeast swell. Saturday should have waves in the 2-3 ft range, with light variables winds forecast all day. The swell will continue to build Sunday (2-4 ft range on most exposed spots) but that will come with freshening north-northeasterly winds that will deteriorate conditions. Looking nice Monday with a westerly change and the swell holding.

Gisborne and Mahia. Small surf in the 1 ft+ range for Saturday, with light winds forecast all day. New NE swell building through Sunday, so expect waves in the 2-4 ft range. Light northerly winds early, that will go more northeast and freshen. Early probably the go if you want a wave. Monday looking good with the swell continuing to build and winds switching to west/northwest (~15-20kts)

Wellington. Not looking good this week-end for town spots. Small surf (0-1 ft ) and strong northerlies. A bit more size on the SE coasts on Sunday but strong onshore winds will make for messy conditions.

Christchurch. Small surf in the 1ft + range for town spots with fresh northerly winds (20kts) all week-end. New south swell filling in Sunday with gusty NE winds so probably a wave to be had on south facing spots.

Dunedin. Nice pulse of south swell (14-15 sec) for this week-end, but winds will be the issue so keep an eye on the winds forecast for the best window of waves. Saturday should have 2ft + building through the day moderate northeasterlies, possibly going southwest in the afternoon. The swell should peak Sunday morning (3-4ft) and will come with fresh NE winds throughout the day (~20kts).

New Zealand Outlook – Week-end 3-4 September

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

A low pressure system around 50 degrees S is drifting eastwards through the week and will bring a fresh new south swell to NZ coasts. At this point it looks like most of the swell energy will be hitting the South-Southeast coasts but the West coast will have its fair share too. In the mean time, a large high-pressure system will move eastwards from the Tasman Sea and generate some strong southwesterly winds for most areas, before settlting over the country next week.
Plenty of swell and action on the way but winds will be the issue so work out your options ans stay up to date with the forecasts to score !

West Coast of the North Island. Solid southwest swell in the 4-6 ft range on exposed spots of the North Island, more in the 6-7+ ft range for the South Island for Saturday, slowly easing through Sunday. Unfortunately fresh southwest winds (~15-20 kts) are forecast through all the week-end, so expect onshore messy surf conditions. Seek for shelter from those onshore winds along the coast if you are keen a for wave.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. No significant swell for the NE coast this week-end. There could be ~1 ft of East swell pushing on most exposed wave magnets, with offshore winds, but not looking too flash.

Gisborne and Mahia. Plenty of south swell (12 seconds) for this week-end. There should be ~4ft sets by Saturday with moderate westerly winds early (~10kts), swinging more southwest by the afternoon. Early is the go. The swell will peak on Sunday, with sets in the 4-6 ft range on exposed spots, with light westerly winds early going again more southwest by the afternoon. Some pockets of good waves along the coast this week-end.

Wellington. Some action lining up for the Wellington spots with a pulse of south swell (12 sec) hitting Saturday and holding through Sunday. There should be sets in the 2-3 ft range with light westerly winds early swinging more south during afternoons but staying light. Bigger on exposed SE spots with moderate southwest winds (10-20 kts).

Christchurch. South swell on the build for this week-end. Small wrapping lines for the town spots but expect solid swell in the 4-6 ft range up and down the coast at exposed SE facing spots. Fresh westerly winds (~20 kts) are on for Saturday morning but they will ease throughout the day and should stay light (~10 kts) for Sunday. Good waves to be had in the area if you don’t mind driving, have fun !

Dunedin. Solid south groundswell on for the week-end. Fresh southwesterly winds (20-30kts) are forecast for Saturday as the swell peaks (5-7 ft+) so big, messy conditions. Winds will progressively slow down during the day and through Sunday, going more westerly (~10 kts). The swell will slowly ease too so conditions should be a bit better (although still solid !).

New Zealand Outlook – Week-end 27/28 August

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

A large high pressure system will settle over New Zealand this week-end and bring nice weather and light winds for most areas. On the wave front, southeast coasts will get some leftovers of the swell that pumped throughout the week, but it will be dropping fast! Nice little swell for the West coast with light winds, so many pockets of good waves to be had along the coast. Make the most of it !

West Coast of the North Island. Nice groundswell in the 3-4 ft range for the week-end. A little pulse is hitting today (Friday) and will slighlty ease Saturday before kicking again on Sunday, with possibly bigger 4-5 ft sets on most exposed spots. Winds should be light early and possibly going to breezes on afternoons but not too strong. Good waves to be had.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Flat day Saturday along the coast, with light to moderate westerly breezes. Looks like Sunday could see a small 1ft of north-northeast swell push, with light winds again, so maybe a small mal’ waves on exposed N-NE wave magnets , if you are keen.

Gisborne and Mahia. There will be some leftovers of the swell that pumped throughout this week but easing quickly ! Saturday should have clean 2 ft + waves with light offshore winds in the morning possibly swinging more easterly in the afternoon but remaining light (~10kts). Similar conditions for Sunday with the swell easing further (1-2 ft range).

Wellington. Quickly easing south swell for this week-end, in the 1 ft+ range Saturday and smaller Sunday. Offshore northwesterly winds throughout the week-end in the 10-20 kts range. Better waves on exposed SE coasts with more size and favourables winds.

Christchurch. Really small surf this week-end for the town spots but there will be some south swell leftover up and down the coast on exposed spots, in the 2ft range Saturday, easing by Sunday. Fresh westerly winds (20-30kts) forecast for Saturday morning, dropping by the afternoon and staying light westerly through Sunday (~10 kts).

Dunedin. Still some good action on for this week-end, with the area getting the most of the easing south groundswell. Winds may be the issue Saturday with southwesterly winds up to 20 kts forecast but they will switch back offshore on Sunday so nice waves to be had.

New Zealand Outlook – Week-end 20/21 August

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

A big high pressure system develops over the Tasman Sea and will slowly move eastward towards NZ bringing clearer weather and lighter winds for the week-end in most areas.
The large SE swell that hit this past week will slowly ease while a nice long-period swell will start building on the West Coast. Some good waves to be had this week-end, work your options !

West Coast of the North Island. Nice long-period swell (~17 sec) starting to really build on Saturday, reaching up to ~ 4+ ft on exposed spots. Light southeasterly winds on for Saturday, going more southerly in the afternoon but staying light (~10kts). Winds will slowly shift more southwest through Sunday but staying light . A lot of option along the West Coast this week-end and plenty of good waves to be had, have fun !

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Small southeast swell (1+ft) for the week with southerly breezes through the week end for the area. The southeast swell angle means that the Bay of Plenty spots will be relatively shadowed, so hit SE wave magnets further north if you are keen for a wave.

Gisborne and Mahia. Still plenty of swell for the week-end. An easing 4-5 ft of southeast-angled swell is forecast for Saturday but winds will (again) be the issue, with fresh southerlies around 15-20 kts. The swell will keep easing on Sunday, probably around 3-4 ft, with winds going more southwest and getting a bit lighter. The sun should be back too !

Wellington. Small easing south swell (1-2ft) with fresh southerlies in the morning, getting lighter through Saturday. Light winds Sunday morning but even smaller surf, so not looking good. Exposed SE coast will have still plenty of southeast swell slowly easing through the week-end. Southerly winds are forecast to drop through Saturday and possibly go more westerly by Sunday morning. There could be a short window of ok waves before the southwesterlies pick up again in the afternoon.

Christchurch. Southeast groundswell leftovers for Saturday with 2+ ft in town spots and bigger up and down the coast, in the 3-4 ft range. Light southwest winds Saturday, picking up through Sunday from the same direction to ~20kts .

Dunedin. Still plenty of southeast swell in the 3ft+ range for Saturday. Light winds early Saturday so there should be a window of good waves. The wind is forecast to pick up from the west/southwest through the day and get strong by Saturday night/Sunday (20+kts), so early is the go. Strong soutwesterly winds for Sunday with an easing 2-3 ft of southeast swell for Sunday.

New Zealand Outlook – Week-end 13/14 August

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

A low pressure system will drift east-southeastward north of the North Island through the week end, bringing some rain along with small NE swell for the East coast.
A big low south of the South Island will drift eastward sending a solid pulse of south swell starting to hit exposed coasts Sunday and building through the beginning of next week, with strong southwest winds Sunday going more southerly through next week.

West Coast of the North Island. Little pulse of southwest swell for Saturday in the 2-4 ft range on exposed coasts, with easterly winds early tending southerly but forecast to remain light all day. Some action and OK surfing for your Saturday. The swell will start building more significantly through Sunday (and onto the beginning of next week) but winds will go southwest and freshen, making for onshore messy conditions. There could be pockets of ok waves early on more wind-protected spots, before the wind really gets up.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Small NE swell in the 1-2 ft range, and a bit bigger on wave magnets on Saturday with SE breezes (~10kts), so some small waves to be had. The swell will slowly ease through Sunday with winds going offshore southwest and freshening to ~20kts, early is the go !

Gisborne and Mahia. Good surfing day for Saturday with 2-3 ft of south groundswell with favourable light northwest winds early possibly going east later but staying light. More swell on the way for Sunday (3-5 ft) but with strong winds from the southwest deteriorating conditions. Solid south swell building through next week but with winds not looking the best at this stage.

Wellington. Not looking great for Wellington spots, with small (~1ft) south lines on for Saturday with light southerly winds. The swell will start pushing a bit on Sunday but it will come with freshening southwest winds.

Christchurch. Not much action for this week-end with small surf in the 1ft range forecast for Saturday/Sunday. Light variable winds for Saturday switching offshore southwest and getting strong on Sunday (~30 kts). Solid pulse of southeast ground swell (14 sec) building through next week, so some action coming !

Dunedin. Easing 2-3 ft of south swell for Saturday with moderate westerly winds early, freshening through the day. Early Saturday is the go if you want a wave as strong southwest winds (~20-30 kts) will take over by Sunday with the swell building sharply throughout the day (4-6 ft range), making for onshore and raw conditions.

New Zealand Outlook for the week-end 6/7 August

New Zealand Outlook for the week end.

Good surfing day lining up for Saturday with waves on both coasts and light winds !
Change in weather pattern for Sunday with a new south groundswell hitting the South Island with strong southwest winds.

West Coast of the North Island. Solid southwest groundswell (3-4 ft) on Saturday with light variable winds early. Good surfing conditions with a lot of options along the coast. Make the most of it on Saturday as strong westerly winds will take over by Sunday and conditions will deteriorate. New pluse of southwest swell beginning of next week.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Slowly easing East swell (2-3 ft) leftover from the pulse hitting today for your Saturday, with favourable light west/southwest winds forecast all day. Good surfing day. Strengthening westerly winds forecast for Sunday with the swell quickly easing throughout the day, so best to hit exposed wave magnets for a wave then.

Gisborne and Mahia. Good 2-3 foot of East swell for Saturday, easing on Sunday. Southwest winds are forecast for Friday dropping by Saturday morning and going light offshore. So maybe a bit of chop in the morning but Saturday should be a real good surfing day once it has cleaned up. Offshore nortwhest winds will strengthen on Sunday (20-30kts) with some smaller leftover surf easing. Solid pulse of south swell for the beginning of next week.

Wellington. Poor surfing conditions this week end for the Wellington area with very small surf and strong westerly winds. Better conditions on the southeast coast with that East swell hitting with offshore winds.

Christchurch. East swell (~2ft ) for Saturday with fresh northerly winds so some waves to be had on wind-protected spots. Winds will go west/southwest on Sunday and strengthen (~20-30 kts) with a new pusle of south swell building thoughout the day (2-4 ft). The south swell will hold through beginning of next week.

Dunedin. Small East swell (~2ft) on Saturday accompanied with light to moderate westerly winds. A solid south groundswell will start building on Sunday with winds switching to westerly and getting strong (~20-30 kts).

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend 30 and 31 July

New Zealand Outlook for the week end. Latest update.
Conditions looking a bit better for the West Coast on Sunday with winds becoming light and tending more south/southeast on latest forecasts.

West Coast of the North Island. Not looking great for Saturday with ~15-20 kts of onshore winds and slowly easing 3-4 ft of southwest swell. The good news is that the latest forecast shows light winds tending south to southeast for Sunday with the swell holding, so there should be pockets of good waves along the coast.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty will continue to have very small conditions through the week end, with moderate offshore winds.

Gisborne and Mahia conditions are looking good for Saturday with moderate offshore winds and easing 2-3 ft of south swell. Less favorable southwest winds will take over by Saturday evening and hold through Sunday, with the swell in same size range.

Wellington spots aren’t looking too good for the weekend. South facing spots will get small south swell with strengthening southerly winds on Saturday. South winds will ease Sunday with a northerly change by midday lasting through the beginning of next week. West facing spots are not great either with choppy onshore surf for Saturday, easing Sunday.

Christchurch. The easing south swell will reach south facing spots this week end but gusty southwest winds will deteriorate conditions on Saturday. A northerly change is forecast for Sunday, with winds going light, so there should be some waves to be had. Town beaches will have very small conditions.

Dunedin. The latest forecast shows southwest winds early Saturday that will deteriorate the 2-3 ft of south swell, so better conditions on more wind protected spots. Winds are expected to drop through Saturday and switch offshore by Sunday so that should produce some really nice conditions.

Look at SwellMap for details of your spot. Have a good week end !

NZ Outlook for the weekend 22 and 23 July

West Coast of the North Island is still looking okay for the weekend. On Saturday the surf should be good and clean with moderate NE winds. The surf is now set to increase on Sunday with swell of over 2m by the evening. The winds on Sunday will pick up in the afternoon from the South at speeds of over 20kts. So look for more protected spots.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty conditions will initially be choppy and rough. However, the NE winds will lighten through Saturday and there should be around 1.5 of swell from the NE at a 9 second period. So it should clean up a bit. Conditions are then forecast to get better for Sunday as winds become light from the SW-S but with the swell slightly dropping. Make the most of Sunday’s surf as the swell drops dramatically on Monday.

Gisborne and Mahia conditions are looking good for the start of the weekend with light variable winds and around 2m of swell for E facing spots. Conditions will be similar Sunday morning although S-SW winds will increase in the afternoon. So it should generally be a good weekend of surf for East facing spots.

Wellington spots aren’t looking to good for the weekend with moderately strong winds from the South East and then going South for Saturday and Sunday. The swell will be around 3m and choppy for the exposed South facing spots.

Christchurch is looking okay with South facing spots on Saturday catching swell of around 2m with moderate winds from the SW. Try East facing spots for a small but cleaner wave. By Sunday winds will increase to over 20kts from the SW and the swell will increase to over 3m, so more East facing spots will be the go with over 1m of swell.

Dunedin is forecast on Saturday for the swell to drop slightly and winds will become moderately light from the W, so SE facing spots are likely to offer good conditions. The swell is now forecast to increase on Sunday to around 2m with SW winds of around 20kts. So more East facing spots will be the smaller but better option.
