New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

With a big low pressure system pushing up the Tasman, it looks like the West Coast of New Zealand will be getting most of the swell this weekend with a mix in quality and increasing in size on Sunday. Expect small conditions for most of the East Coast. The weather is not looking great with rain expected for most of the weekend for many parts.

West Coast of the North Island. Saturday is looking like the best day for quality surf this weekend, with increasing fresh offshore winds (~ NE 20 kts) through the day and waves in the 3-4 ft range. On Sunday, winds are forecast to become stronger (~ 20-25 kts) from the SW with waves becoming very solid (5-7 ft) by the afternoon due to the low pressure system really pushing up the swell. So make the most of Saturday as conditions may become too big and choppy on Sunday. However, next week is showing signs of pumping clean surf with winds swinging S on Monday and then E from Tuesday onwards.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. The swell is currently easing with waves forecast to be around 1-2 ft mark for Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is not looking great with a fresh N (~ 15-20 kts) wind which is likely to create some cross-shore chop for E facing spots. Much of the swell is looking to be wind generated. Sunday should see some improvements with a cleaner wave as the wind goes fresh SW (~ 15-20 kts).

Gisborne and Mahia. Its looking like a small average weekend of surf with waves around 1 ft for E facing spots. Moderate N (~ 10-15 kts) winds are predicted for most of the weekend with SW winds later Sunday afternoon.

Wellington. Expect very small conditions this weekend, with micro conditions for city beaches and 1ft max for more exposed spots. Fresh N (~ 15-20 kts) winds are forecast for Saturday and then going Strong NW (~ 25 kts) for Sunday.

Christchurch. There be some surf around this weekend with conditions looking more favourable on Sunday. Saturday should see waves in the 2-3 ft range by the afternoon but conditions will be messy with strong N winds (~ 20-25 kts). With lots of localised wind swell in the mix Sunday will not be pumping, although winds are forecast to go moderate W (~ 15-20 kts) so conditions should clean up to produce a fun surfable wave for E facing spots.

Dunedin. On Saturday there will be swell from the NE, so E-NE facing will be catching 1-2 ft wave. Although winds will be fresh from the N-NE (~ 15-20 kts) so surf conditions are likely to be poor. By Sunday a new ground swell from the S is set to push in, so check S facing spots for surf in th 2-3 ft range. Strong W (~ 20-25 kts) winds are forecast for most of the day, so conditions should be semi-clean and surfable.

Look at SwellMap for details of your spot.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

With a weather system out in the Pacific pushing in today, its looking like the East Coast of the North Island will catch the most swell this weekend. This weather system will also be bringing moderate SE winds, so average onshore conditions for East Coast spots. SwellMap is forecasting small offshore conditions for the West Coast this weekend although this is expected to change by Tuesday as a solid ground swell approaches with moderate S going E winds. Also expect mainly cloud and showers throughout New Zealand for most of the weekend.

West Coast of the North Island. The weekend is looking consistently small and clean with moderate E (~ 10-15 kts) for Saturday and Sunday with surf in the 1-2 ft range. So definitely worth a look for playful surf at exposed spots. Keep checking the forecast for updates, but currently SwellMap is forecasting some good solid surf for Tuesday onwards.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. The swell is forecast to peak today (Friday) with waves around the 3 ft range. By tomorrow (Saturday) the swell will drop with waves likely to be more in the 1-2 ft range. Winds will be moderate (~ 10-15 kts) from the SE, so expect average conditions but definitely surfable. The surf is predicted to drop slightly on Sunday with moderate winds from the NE. Again still surfable but seek wind protected spots for cleaner conditions.

Gisborne and Mahia. There will definitely be some swell hitting this weekend although the winds are not looking favourable. Expect onshore conditions with waves around the 4-5 ft range for E facing spots and moderate (~ 15 kts) E winds for Saturday. By Sunday the swell is forecast to drop to around 2-3 ft with fresh winds (~ 15-20 kts) blowing from the NE. This may offer cleaner conditions for South facing spots with waves more in the 2 ft range.

Wellington. Expect small surf for City spots with waves around 1 ft (possibly 2 ft max) for Saturday with moderate NE (~ 10 kts) winds in the morning going moderate SW by the afternoon. More exposed South facing spots should see bigger waves around the 2-3 ft range and stronger winds. The swell is forecast to drop on Sunday with waves forecast to be 1 ft max for City spots and 2 ft for more exposed spots. Winds will be moderate N for Sunday so look for South facing spors for optimum conditions.

Christchurch. Expect mainly average surf for the weekend with mainly wind swell conditions bringing waves around the 2-3 ft range for E facing spots with some improvement for Sunday. Fresh NE winds (~ 15-20 kts) are forecast for Saturday so conditions are forecast to be choppy. More ground swell is predicted to push in from the East on Sunday with gentle W winds for the morning and winds going gentle E by the afternoon. So look for cleaner fun conditions for Sunday.

Dunedin. The surf is looking fun and clean on Saturday for South facing spots with waves in the 2 ft range with fresh NE winds (~ 20 kts). So some nice offshore conditions. Winds are forecast to go moderate S for Sunday with swell pushing in from the E. So look for more E facing spots on Sunday for cleaner conditions.

Look at SwellMap for details of your spot.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

The surf is looking to be solid for many East facing spots due to a low pressure system off to the East of the North Island. There should be some very good surf for Christchurch and Dunedin, and also some reasonable surf for many East facing spots on the North Island. The West coast is looking average for most of the weekend although a low pressure system from the South should push up more swell for Sunday.

West Coast of the North Island. The weekend is not looking too great for surf with dominant moderate SW (~ 15 kts) winds. Initially on Saturday the waves will be around the 1-2 ft range for exposed W facing spots with winds lightest in the morning. On Sunday a low from the South is expected to push up some swell. The waves are predicted to be around 3 ft on Sunday morning and then increasing to the 4-5 ft range by the evening. Conditions are expected to be average due to the moderate SW wind continuing through Sunday. Look for the cleanest conditions on Saturday and the bigger waves in Sunday evening.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Its looking like another fun weekend of surf. A moderate SW (~15 kts) wind should provide some clean offshore conditions for the entire weekend with consistent 2-3 ft surf for both Saturday and Sunday. Find the bigger surf at more SE facing spots.

Gisborne and Mahia. The swell is forecast to be pretty big on Saturday although it is forecast to drop through the weekend. On Saturday expect solid surf around the 6-7 ft range with light to moderate SW winds. Due to the size of the swell and the S wind blast on Friday expect only average wave quality and challenging conditions. It should improve and become more manageable on Sunday with waves more in the 4-6 ft range and moderate SW winds.

Wellington. The surf is looking reasonable for exposed East facing spots with solid 4-6 ft waves expected for most of the weekend. Winds will initially be light E for Saturday morning and then switch to moderate SW by the afternoon and for the rest of the weekend. So expect reasonable solid conditions this weekend. Town beaches will unfortunately be micro as swell is coming from the East.

Christchurch. Its looking like excellent conditions for both Saturday and Sunday for East facing spots with a solid swell that should generate waves in the 3-5 ft range for most of the weekend. The swell will peak on Saturday with light SW (~ 5-10 kts) winds. Winds are then forecast to be light and variable for Sunday with a slight drop in swell.

Dunedin. The surf is looking to be very good for East facing spots with solid swell in the 5-6 ft range all weekend. The winds are expected to be moderate SW (~ 10 kts) for Saturday and then become light (~ 5-10 kts) and variable for Sunday.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

A large low pressure system is currently passing in the far South which is looking to generate some solid swell for the weekend for both West and East coast. Expect mainly fine weather conditions for most of the North Island with just initial showers for Saturday morning. A front will catch the West Coast of the South Island so expect more unstable weather conditions with showers for this area.

Although the West Coast is looking to get most of the swell, conditions are looking way more fun and manageable on many parts of the East coast due to the dominant W-SW winds. Look for SE facing spots to catch the more of the surf.

West Coast of the North Island. With a solid building swell coming from the deep South expect some big 6-8 ft waves all weekend. Unfortunately, the consistent SW going W moderate (~15 kts) winds will mean poor conditions for most spots. The swell will start to drop on Sunday although conditions will still be difficult and messy.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Its looking to be a fun weekend of surf with a small pulse in swell and moderate W-SW (~15 kts) winds. The swell will be coming from the ESE and waves are forecast to be around the 2-3 ft range for most of Saturday on the exposed spots. The waves are predicted to drop in size on Sunday but still clean and fun.

Gisborne and Mahia. Conditions are looking pretty good for most of the weekend with light variable winds and some reasonably sized swell. On Saturday the more E facing spots will pick up the most swell. Expect waves around the 3-4 ft range with the winds looking optimum mid-morning. Then by Sunday, a new swell start to pulse from SE which has been generated by this low pressure system in the far South. Expect clean waves in the 2 ft range for South facing spots.

Wellington. There will be a rise in SE swell over the weekend with a peak on Saturday evening. Forecast conditions are looking good for both Saturday and Sunday with waves in the 2-3 ft range for exposed SE facing spots. Winds will be light W (~5-10 kts) for most of Saturday and then becoming strong NW (~25-30 kts) by Sunday lunch time. Expect smaller waves (1-2 ft max) for more protected spots.

Christchurch. East facing spots are looking like the best option for Saturday with light-moderate W winds and clean waves in the 1-2 ft range. On Sunday, as the winds swing to the NW and swell pushes in from the South, check more South facing spots for a cleaner wave.

Dunedin. The swell will be pulsing from the South all weekend with consistent fresh W winds (~20-25 kts). South facing spots will catch the bigger wave (3-4 ft) although W winds will make conditions messy. Seek more Easterly facing spots for a smaller cleaner wave (1-2 ft).

Look at SwellMap for details of your spot.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

A high pressure system has just passed over most of New Zealand leaving stable conditions for a fairly warm weekend of sunny spells with scattered light showers for most parts.

The stand out surf for this weekend is looking to be on the West Coast of the North Island with an easing clean swell and moderate E-NE winds (~15 kts). Conditions are looking pretty small for the East coast, and there should be a fun small wave down South around Dunedin and Christchurch on Saturday.

West Coast of the North Island. Its looking very good this weekend with moderate offshore E-NE winds (~ 15 kts) for exposed W facing spots. The swell will slowly drop through the weekend with initial waves on Saturday morning around the 4-5 ft range. By Sunday evening the waves will be more in 3 ft range. Look for the more glassy conditions first thing in the mornings as the winds will be lighter. Conditions are also continuing to look good for Monday.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. There is expected to be poor surf all weekend with moderate E-NE onshore winds. A localised wind swell will generate waves around the 2 ft range but be prepared for poor choppy conditions.

Gisborne and Mahia. A small swell from the South should provide a wave for South facing spots in the 2 ft range with light going moderate NE winds for Saturday. So there should be some fun clean surf around. On Sunday the swell will start to drop but there is predicted to be a small clean 1-2 ft wave for most of the day.

Wellington. Exposed South facing spots should catch some fun surf in the 2 ft range for Saturday with light NW winds (~ 5-10 kts). On Sunday the swell is looking to drop (waves around the 1-2 ft mark) and the N wind becoming moderate (~ 15 kts). So Saturday is looking the better day for surf.

Christchurch. South facing spots are looking the better options this weekend with a small easing S swell. Conditions are forecast to be clean tomorrow with light N winds (~ 5-10 kts) and waves around 2-3 ft. Sunday will see smaller conditions with waves forecast to be about 1 ft. Make the most of Saturday’s better conditions.

Dunedin. Check out the South facing spots as a S swell continues to produce waves for the weekend. Saturday is looking better for size with waves in the 2-3ft range. But winds are predicted to become moderate in the afternoon from the E. The swell is then looking to drop Sunday with waves around 1 ft and moderate N winds. Saturday morning is looking the most promising for the bigger and cleaner waves.

New Zealand Outlook for the weekend.

After some extreme weather conditions this week with some solid swell blasting the West coast, it’s looking like things should calm down for the weekend as a high pressure system passes over most of the North Island. Moderate SW winds are forecast to dominate the upper North Island for most of the weekend and moderate SW going N winds for the remaining part of the country. Most areas of the country will experience scattered showers but the weather should generally should be pleasant and warm.

There is no indication on SwellMap of any stand-out surf conditions for the long weekend, although the surf is looking more consistent on the West Coast.

West Coast of the North Island. Conditions are currently still looking quite raw with onshore wind and solid 5-6 ft waves for exposed spots. The weekend should see slightly improved conditions as SW winds lighten and the swell continues to drop throughout the weekend. Expect waves initially of around 5-6 ft tomorrow, and going 4 ft by Monday. The current forecast indicates windows of better surf on Sunday morning and Monday morning when winds are expected to lighten the most.

East coast spots around Auckland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty. Unfortunately micro conditions expected all weekend with moderate going light SW winds.

Gisborne and Mahia. A small swell should continue to pulse from the South with waves peaking on Saturday at around 2ft for South facing spots, going 1 ft for Sunday and Monday. Winds will be moderate SW (~15 kts) for most of Saturday, so creating slightly choppy conditions for South facing spots. However, conditions should then clean up on Sunday and Monday as winds become light N (~10 kts).

Wellington. There should be a wave around the 2 ft range for the more exposed S facing for Saturday morning although expect choppy conditions with a moderate SW wind (~15 kts). Conditions are predicted to clean-up for Sunday and Monday as the wind swings to the North although expect a drop in swell with waves in the 1-2 ft range (at most) for exposed South spots. The N wind is forecast to pick up (~ 25 kts) on Monday afternoon. So look for a bigger wave on Saturday but more favourable conditions most of Sunday and Monday morning.

Christchurch. Its looking like the South facing spots will catch the swell this weekend although the swell will slowly decrease through the weekend until a S swell kicks in on Monday. Expect an average quality 2-3 ft wave with light to moderate SW winds for Saturday. Then winds are predicted to predominantly blow from the North for Sunday and Monday so conditions should then become much cleaner for South facing spots. With a swell (~ 14 sec period) increasing on Monday look for a clean 3 ft wave by the afternoon.

Dunedin. There will be an average 1-2 ft wave for Saturday and Sunday for more South facing spots with a slowly decreasing S swell and moderate W winds (~ 10-15 kts). However, Monday is looking more promising for South facing spots as winds go N and a S swell builds. Look for best conditions on Monday morning with waves around 2-3 ft and lighter winds. By Monday afternoon the N wind is predicted to get stronger and more gusty.
