The picture below shows a NE swell hitting the Mount
Maunganui and Matakana coastline. The picture shows the effects
of the island, entrance channel and the ebb-tidal delta offshore
from Tauranga / Mount Maunganui on the swell hitting this stretch
of coastline. The wobbliness of the swell lines hitting Matakana
are due to the ebb-tidal delta offshore (i.e. Matakana Bank), and
helps setup the peaky barreling waves that Matakana is known for.
Similar situations are found at Aromoana near Dunedin and South
Stradbroke Island on the Gold Coast Australia.
